The law protects the confidentiality of nearly all communication between clients and counselors. Exceptions include when the safety of person(s) would be jeopardized if a therapist maintained confidences, if abuse, abandonment, or neglect was reported of a child, adolescent under age 18, an adult over age 65, a mentally ill, or mentally handicapped person, a child or adolescent witnessed domestic violence, the client was involved in a crime against the therapist, the therapist received a legal subpoena, or a state licensing board audited the therapist's records.
