What happens in therapy? How often does it happen? |

Therapy sessions provide safe places for individuals to talk about their concerns. Couples and families communicate more openly and deeply in therapy. Sessions last 50 minutes. At the beginning, it is helpful to have weekly sessions, and to think about and practice newly developed skills on the days between sessions. Toward the end of the therapy, it is often possible to meet less frequently, allowing more time for thoughtful practice. Sometimes people come to therapy with crises that need more than one session per week. Although there are many exceptions, most people make desired changes within 6 to 12 sessions.
